The Bangalore Turf Club Authorities displayed great foresight by taking a hands-on approach towards the jockey's licensing issue that had been simmering for the past few days. Without wasting any time, they invited a team from the Jockey's Association to meet them this morning. It is learnt that the meeting was held in a most conducive atmosphere and both sides were more than ready to solve the important issues. The presence of Mr Fin Powrie was a great help. Mr Powrie, who took charge as a racing consultant to the Club a few days ago, has vast experience in business practises followed by Race Clubs all over the world.
He was the racing consultant to the Dubai Race Club for many years.
The BTC had stipulated vide its circular dated 21st March that a jockey must have 30 mounts and 3 winners in the preceding year before he is granted a licence to ride in future. It was also informed that they would follow these norms and watch the performance over the next six months. The JAI had found this announcement too sudden and extremely stiff. They had requested that the timeframe should be extended to a year and the number of mounts/wins should be reduced. It is learnt that the two sides tentatively agreed to the following terms.
1. A jockey must ride in at least 20 races during the license period from 1st April to 31st March.
2. A jockey must place in at least 10% of the races that he has ridden during the said period.
3. The period of review for the above performance shall be from 1st April 2008 till 31st March 2009 (one year). The above shall be taken into cognisance while considering applications for issue of licenses for the period 2009-2010.
The black clouds of uncertainty over the timely start of the summer season seem to have been blown away. Racegoers can look forward to a wonderful season with many well endowed races being framed for horses older than the classic age.
